سائل أو هلام توضع فيه المسحات أو العينات لإبقاء الكائنات الحية أو الحموض النووية سليمة حتى تصل إلى المختبر. من أمثلته وسط أميس أو ستيوارت لمسحات الجراثيم، ووسط النقل الفيروسي لتحاليل PCR التنفسية. استخدام مسحة جافة أو وسط خاطئ قد يعطي نتيجة سلبية كاذبة.
Definition
A liquid or gel into which swabs or specimens are placed to keep organisms alive, or nucleic acids intact, until they reach the laboratory. Examples are Amies or Stuart medium for bacterial swabs and viral transport medium for respiratory PCR. Using a dry swab or the wrong medium can produce a false negative result.
