المعيار الأولي مادة نقية جداً ومستقرة تُحدد قيمتها دون الرجوع إلى معيار آخر من الكمية نفسها، وتقع في أعلى سلسلة التتبّع. تستعمله الجهات المرجعية والشركات المصنعة لإسناد القيم إلى المعايير الثانوية، ونادراً ما يحتاجه المختبر الروتيني.
Definition
A primary standard is a highly pure, stable material whose value is established without reference to another standard of the same quantity, placing it at the top of the traceability chain. Reference bodies and manufacturers use it to assign values to secondary standards, and routine labs rarely need one.
