المؤشر الحيوي صفة محددة تُقاس كدليل على عملية حيوية طبيعية أو مرضية أو على الاستجابة لتعرض أو تدخل علاجي. أغلب ما يقيسه المخبر مؤشرات حيوية، مثل التروبونين لأذية عضلة القلب والكرياتينين لوظيفة الكلية، وقيمة المؤشر تتوقف على حساسيته ونوعيته وعلى جودة قياسه.
Definition
A biomarker is a defined characteristic measured as an indicator of a normal biological process, a disease process, or a response to an exposure or intervention. Most of what a laboratory measures are biomarkers, such as troponin for heart muscle injury or creatinine for kidney function, and their value depends on sensitivity, specificity and measurement quality.
