البيوفيلم تجمع من الجراثيم أو الفطور ملتصق بسطح ومحاط بمادة خارج خلوية تفرزها، كما على القثاطر والأجهزة المزروعة. تتحمل الجراثيم في البيوفيلم تراكيز من المضادات أعلى بكثير من الجراثيم الحرة، لذلك قد لا يعكس اختبار الحساسية الروتيني الاستجابة الفعلية، ويصعب أحيانًا عزلها من العينة.
Definition
A biofilm is a community of bacteria or fungi attached to a surface and enclosed in a matrix they secrete, as on catheters and implanted devices. Organisms in a biofilm tolerate much higher antimicrobial concentrations than free-floating cells, so routine susceptibility testing may not reflect the real response, and recovering them from the sample can be difficult.
