Interoperability is the ability of different systems and devices to exchange data and to understand and use them without manual intervention. It relies on transport standards such as HL7 and ASTM and on meaning standards such as LOINC, so a haemoglobin result travels from the lab analyzer to the clinic's patient record unchanged.
